Basic Help Information: SAMPLE DISPLAYS You can search the IMPC database using the following search fields which can be found on the left hand menu bar. Advanced Search Film Details Crew Cast All Names Category Year Title To conduct a search select the relevant term from the menu. The search page defaults to Fuzzy Search and Begins with and is not case sensitive. For example, if you select Crew you will see a page that looks like this:

	Simple search for Crew categories: If you want to search on two categories, click the Advanced Search menu. When performing a Fuzzy Search you may choose Begins with to search the beginning of a name or Included in to match any part of the name.
	Enter the name as last name, first name.

You can limit your search to one year, a range of years or you can search the entire database. If nothing is entered in the year(s) field, the search will include all years currently in the database. To limit the search to films released during one year type the year in the From box. Enter all four digits of the year. To limit the search to films released during a range of years, type the earliest year in the From box and the final year in the To box. Enter all four digits of the year.
When to use an exact search
	When you want to limit the number of hits you receive
	When you are sure of the exact spelling of an individual's name
	When you are sure of the exact wording of a film's title
When to use a fuzzy search
	When you want to use the asterisk (*) wildcard in place of any unknown character or range of characters
	When you want the largest possible number of hits
	When you don't know the exact spelling of an individual's name
	When you don't know the exact wording of a film title
	1.	When the person has been credited in several different ways
	2.	If the person sometimes uses a middle initial
	3.	If the person sometimes uses Jr. or Sr. at the end of his name
	4.	If the person has changed her name after marriage
When to use Begins with
	When you know the beginning of an individual's name, even if you are not sure about the way the rest of the name is spelled
	When you're searching for a person and you know the last name, but not the first name
	When you're looking for several people with the same last name
When to use Included in
	When you are not sure about the order of a person's name
	When you only know a part of a person's name
	When you know a portion of a film title
	When you want all film titles with word "x" in them

All fields can be narrowed by choosing sub-categories from the drop down menu.

Simple Searches Film Details Use Film Details to find information on production companies, releasing companies, MPAA ratings, Los Angeles release dates, color, film type (animation, documentary, compilation), language, source author and source material. Crew: Use Crew to search for credits by field. To search for an individual's credits across all categories, choose the broad Crew search. This search offers a picture of the range of an individual's experience. If you don't find any matches or if you're not sure about the spelling of the individual's name, you can enter the last name only, or a portion of the name. You can make your search narrower by choosing the exact search option, or by restricting the search to one year or a range of years. The Crew search is broken down into thirteen sub-categories: Art Direction, Casting, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Makeup, Music, Producing, Sound, Stunt Coordinating, Visual and Special Effects and Writing. Use one of these sub-categories To find an individual's credits in a specific field To find credits of a person who only works in one field. You can make your search even narrower by choosing one of the crafts within the sub-category. For example if you were only interested in a person's credits as art director, you would select Art Direction, and then Art Director(s). Cast: Use Cast to search for acting credits. You can search by the actor's name or by character name. You can narrow the search by entering a range of years. Fuzzy search, Included in will return a list of all actors whose character name included the words Mike Wallace, for example, Producer for Mike Wallace show.

All Names: Use the All Names search to find credits for: People who work in multiple fields When you're unsure of someone's exact field. To search for films in which a person worked in two different fields, for example, films that Jodie Foster produced and acted in, use Advanced Search instead of All Names Category Search: Use the Category Search to display all the individuals who worked in a specific field. As in the Craft Search, you can narrow the search by selecting one of the Craft subdivisions. You can further narrow the search by entering a single year or a range of years. For example, if you wanted a list of all the casting directors who worked in 2001 Select Category Select Casting Enter "2001" in the From box Title Search: Use this search when you know the title, or part of the title of a film. If you're not sure of the exact title of the film, use the default Included in. For example, a search for Halloween will return all films with the word "Halloween" somewhere in the title. If you select Beginning with, your search will return only those films that begin with the word "Halloween". Year: Use the Year search to display an alphabetical list of all films that opened in Los Angeles County during a calendar year. Simply type the desired four-digit year in the box. To see the complete record for any film, click on the title. Advanced Search Use Advanced Search to: Combine two different terms using and, for example:

1.	Films with Woody Allen as director and Miramax as releasing company
2.	Films that Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte made together
3.	Films directed by Ethan Coen and filmed in black and white
4.	Films where Jodie Foster functioned as both actress and producer

To restrict your search to a specific category, select one from the drop-down list under In the specific category.
